Earth observation for marine and coastal mapping

Ocean  |  01 March, 2020

Earth observation for marine and coastal mapping, monitoring and analysis provides a fast and cost-effective method of understanding the current coastal state.

  • Satellite Derived Bathymetry (Sea Floor Mapping) and Vector Shoreline extraction
  • Rapid collection and processing of large areas
  • High level of detail and accuracy possible
  • Regular repeat capture possible including change detection.

Application

The world’s coastal zone is home to a large percentage of the global human population and is estimated to provide $2 trillion to the global economy. This region is dynamic and vulnerable to the risks and changes associated with human development, climate change, sea level rise and storm events.

Deriving geospatial data from Earth Observation (EO) satellites provides a fast and cost-effective method of understanding the current situation.

UK expertise

4 Earth Intelligence have worked to combine their experienced UK based hydrographers, oceanographers and marine scientists with a team of remote sensing experts. This has created marine and coastal remote sensing data and services that can be readily applied for real world applications, particularly coastal and shallow water environmental applications.

4 Earth Intelligence provided their marine and coastal data to a large range of sectors and stakeholders to aid in sustainable coastal construction, understand the after effects of natural disasters, inform hydrodynamic and storm surge modelling, and connect the blue economy.

4 Earth Intelligence’s satellite derived products are being deployed by UK government agencies in support of storm related disaster relief throughout the globe.
